Choosing the correct bit model depends on rock conditions. Rocks can be soft, medium-hard, hard, or abrasive. The type of drilling rig also determines the choice of DTH bits. Different tungsten carbide teeth and configurations suit different rock drilling. Convex DTH bits maintain a high drilling rate in medium-hard and hard abrasive rocks but have poor hole straightness. Flat bits are robust and durable, suitable for drilling hard and very hard rocks. This bit shape has a conical recess on the end face, providing the best dust removal and fast speed, making it the most commonly used DTH bit on the market.
Choosing the right DTH bit is essential for optimal performance, considering rock hardness, abrasiveness, and drill type (high-pressure or low-pressure).
When installing DTH bits, follow standardized procedures. Gently place the bit into the DTH hammer bit chuck, avoiding forceful collisions to prevent damage to the bit tail or chuck. Ensure adequate air pressure during drilling. If the hammer works intermittently or powder discharge is poor, check the compressed air system to keep the hole free of debris. If metal objects fall into the hole, use magnets or other methods to remove them to avoid bit damage. When replacing bits,
consider the drilled hole size. If the bit is excessively worn but the hole is not finished, do not replace it with a new bit to avoid jamming. Use a similarly worn old bit to complete the task.
